Chucking a result of faulty action from junior level: Sekhar Oversight from coaches in early stages of career often result in bowlers with faulty action resulting which they are called by umpires for chucking. Ex-Indian pacer T. A. Sekhar, who is now a bowling consultant to the Bengal team under Vision 2020 project, stressed on the role of the coaches of the junior teams in shaping up careers of bowlers. "At the junior level its not only about winning a tournament. It is about producing players who would play for India for a longer tenure. I think the coaches in U-16 and U-19 teams should keep a hawk eye on the bowling actions of these young bowlers. Those who are chucking should be told in their early stages and have their action rectified. Sometimes oversight leads to faulty actions, which later prove career altering,” he said, when asked why so many bowlers across the world at international level are called for chucking. Talking about the current crop of junior players, he said: "There are lot of bowlers doing well. I don’t want to name any one in particular. I can see a lot of talent in the bowlers. I believe within a couple of years Bengal will produce more bowlers playing at international level." Talking about Md Shami and Ashok Dinda, Sekhar said, "Shami recovered from a career ending knee injury. A lot of fast bowlers wouldn’t have made this. And BCCI is also looking after their performance in the domestic level cricket. And Dinda, I would say, is also doing well and will keep doing well in the future”. Sekhar praised the Vision 2020 project and said: “The vision 2020 camp is obviously a positive step taken by the CAB. This will definitely help the Bengal team for the future. The bowlers are bowling quite consistently in the net. I hope this will give a positive result. I always believe fitness is the key to success and sometimes it is more important than talent". Shami hopes to continue good work in home series For comeback Indian pacer Md Shami, hunger to excel and tireless hardwork are the twin mantras for success. The wily right hand fast medium bowler, who plays for Bengal, became the toast of the team in West Indies scalping 14 wickets in the series. "It is a comeback of sorts for me. For 18 months I was out of the side nursing the injury and rehabilitating. I am really happy that I was able to do the job for my team and captain," Md Shami told CAB Media Desk. Talking about the strict regimen he followed on road to recovery, Shami said: "Knee injuries are tough as the whole body weight of a bowler is on his knees. The NCA training helped me a lot. It was a very difficult time. Only I know how focussed I was on my rehab and training to get back in shape. I had to lose weight, fight fits of blue. But my wife stood by me like a rock." "When I went on the tour, I knew I did not have to do anything flashy. I just focussed on my swing, length and line. I did not want to make errors there. I am lucky that I was able to force the batsmen to make mistakes," Shami said of his bowling in the Caribbeans and went on to add: "I had a plan. It was successful. I didn't want to make too many changes to my bowling." Asked about the forthcoming New Zealand series: "I will bowl normally and do my best with the new ball. I will try to support the spinners. But if we bend our backs and get two three early wickets it will be helpful for the team." On Virat Kohli heaping praises on him, he said: "It feels good if the captain has faith on you. We need to keep the fire burning inside us. As a bowler we need to be hungry for wickets as a batsman should be for runs." He went on to add that India now had a much better record overseas than before. "And we must keep improving everyday. I just want to keep doing my work with full dedication," Shami said. Waiting to see Ranji on neutral venues: Laxman Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) will hold Ranji matches like every season at Eden Gardens and not one of them will host the home team. And this is exciting former Indian middle-order bat V V S Laxman. Laxman, praising the decision of BCCI of organizing domestic matches at neutral venues, said this was going to test the skill of the players and also their ability cope with unfamiliar conditions. "I am really glad that a lot of initiatives are being taken. We will have to wait and see how it works out for the teams at the neutral venues. The control over the wicket, which is so important, will be with the BCCI and not the state associations." "So the wickets will not be in favour of the home team. Now we need to see how it pans out. This initiative from BCCI will see domestic cricket become more competitive and challenging for the players," he added. Talking about the lack of crowd for Ranji matches, Laxman viewed: "I think the competition is good at the domestic level. I don’t expect people will come and watch the domestic matches. When you see international Test matches also, you find a motley crowd unless it has the big rivalries." He then went on to add that Ranji matches were more about learning and less about entertainment. "What is important is to make sure that the standards at the domestic or first class level are high. If you have strong first class structure then automatically the quality of players going to represent the country will be good," said Laxman. CAB MEDIA DESK Carpe Diem Arindam 9830388835 |

Bengal can win Ranji Trophy this season: Laxman Lauding Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) President Sourav Ganguly for his Vision 2020 project, former teammate and iconic India batsman V V S Laxman today said that Bengal Team has the talent to win Ranji Trophy this season if they play to their potential. Laxman has been appointed as the batting consultant for Bengal and is currently overseeing the U-23 crop of players. He is scheduled to come back again on September 17 and take charge of the Ranji probables. "I am happy at the way Bengal Cricket is progressing. Like if you see they did well in the Ranji Trophy last year. They lost in the quarterfinals because of one bad batting performance in the first Innings where Madhya Pradesh got a big score and then in the second innings Bengal got a big score but still was not able to win the match,” Laxman told CAB in an interview. "But other than this it was fantastic to see the way the batsmen did and also the bowlers. It was a good combined effort. I think they topped the table last year and I feel there is a lot of potential in this Bengal side. They started off well this season winning the KSCA tournament in Bangalore in which they played against some quality sides, including Mumbai. I believe if they play to their potential, they can win the Ranji Trophy this year," he added. Bengal team went on to win the Dr. (Capt.) K Thimmappiah Memorial Cricket Tournament 2016 defeating KSCA XI by 6 wickets. Talking about the pluses of winning Ranji Trophy, he said, “once they do that (win Ranji Trophy) automatically a lot of players will be getting chance in the national team. We talk about Karnataka and Mumbai and it’s because they go on to win the Ranji. I am convinced that this Bengal team has the potential to go on and win it." Talking about the Vision 2020 campaign and the initiative taken by CAB, Laxman said: “I am doing this only because of Sourav (Ganguly). Once he became the President he called, almost persuaded me to pick up this role and I am always convinced that whatever responsibility Sourav (Ganguly) takes he does that with full commitment." "It’s great to see Sourav taking up this responsibility of making sure that Bengal cricket goes forward. He excelled in whatever role has been assigned to, be it in the field of captaincy in the year 2000 when Indian cricket was going through a tough period or here. He transformed the way the Indian cricket team played while chasing runs and the entire mindset. Now even in administration he has done very well," he added. Laxman praised Sourav for the way he organised the India-Pakistan match during the 50-Over World Cup. CAB MEDIA DESK Carpe Diem: Sayan Banerjee: 9830889424 |
